Meet Our Doctor
Dr. William Atkinson, O.D.
Dr. William Atkinson found a passion for the sciences when he was attending Pleasant Plains High School in central Illinois, and began to search for ways he could help people and apply the sciences in the process.
He landed on optometry, a field in which he still remains excited to come to work every day, so he can laugh with and help his patients with their eye care needs. Dr. Atkinson completed his undergraduate degree in 1988 in biology at Springfield College in Illinois and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Upon graduating, he went on to the Illinois College of Optometry, where he received his doctorate in optometry in 1992. He then started practicing at Woodstock Eye Care and Pearle Vision, and Atkinson Eye Care opened in 1994.
Dr. William enjoys practicing primary care optometry, where he sees patients of all ages and develops relationships with them over the years. He is especially interested in fitting specialty contacts, such as scleral contacts for patients with corneal abnormalities.
Ortho K lenses that reduce nearsightedness in children, and bifocal contacts in patients who have been told that wearing contacts to correct their distance and near vision is an impossibility.
Dr Atkinson is equally excited about his resent expansion of the practice in developing Eye Care at Home for patients who are home bound or in assisted living facilities. He has coined the phrase, “We come to you when it is difficult for you to come to us”.
Outside of work, Dr. Atkinson enjoys an active lifestyle, including hiking and backpacking, running, biking, and kayaking. His hobbies are cooking, and trying new cuisines, travelling and woodworking.
Dr. Atkinson has raised his three adult children in the Algonquin area and enjoys visiting and spending as much time with them as he can.
